OUTAGE IMPACT: Port Lincoln Foodland store manager Chad Smalbil in the store’s empty deli section last week.LONG-TERM plans to upgrade Eyre Peninsula’s transmission line could be brought forward following last week’s power outage.

Electricity was gradually restored across Port Lincoln on Friday eveningafter about 48 hours without power, whilesome areas ofLower Eyre Peninsula waitedmore than 70 hours for power to be restored.

A spokesperson for Electranet, the company that operates the state’s high voltage electricity transmission network, said on Monday fault investigation was hampered by Thursday’sweather and access issues on flooded ground.

The spokesperson said given the impact of the recent weather event, it was possiblethe transmission line upgrade proposal would be prioritised.

“The recent supply interruptions on the Eyre Peninsula support ElectraNet’s investigation of whether building a new double circuit transmission line would provide better reliability and cost outcomes for customers compared to ongoing maintenance and repairs of the existing line supported by contracted back-up generation at Port Lincoln.”

However anew line would only go ahead if the benefits to customers exceeded the costs.

Port Lincoln mayor Bruce Green said theneed for an upgrade hadbeen identified “for quite some time”.

“We know it’s needed; it’s something that has been recognised by Electranet as a limiting factor for this part of the world.”

Mr Green also questioned why Port Lincoln’sback-up generators only worked for a few hours andwhat could have been done differently.

Electranet said the company responsible for the back-up generators advised technical issues arose when the generators started operation on Wednesday.

Mr Green saidthe inter-dependency of telecommunications and the power supply also needed to be addressed as manypeople he had spoken to were more concerned about the telecommunications failure than the power outage.
