The Starlight Express Room at John Hunter Children’sHospital could have easilybeen mistaken for a hair salon last week when hair stylists popped in to pampersick kids and their families.

The Starlight Children’sFoundation joined forces withAustralian Hairdressing Council (AHC)stylists from Abbiss, Bliss Hair Artists, Suki and Chameleon to give patients and their families a distraction from hospital.

NapoleonPerdis make-up artists were also on hand for the event, which was part of Starlight’sinaugural National Pop Up Salon Day.

Starlight’s resident superhero Captain Starlight kept families entertained with hair and make-uptips of his own throughout the day.

John Hunter Children’s Hospitalprograms manager Jono Brand said the day was to give patients and their families “a little bit of luxury and comfort that they normally wouldn’t have in hospital”.

“The whole point of Captain Starlight and the Starlight Express room is to create a space for kids and their families to get away from the hospital environment,” Mr Brand said.

“It’s a place for them to laugh and play and where they can forget about being sick. Some spend a lot of time in hospital and are definitely away from the comforts of home.”

In May over 202 AHC salons joined forces to raise$93,000,giving over 2300 sick childrenand their families access to Starlight’s hospital programs.
