Muster madness: Three mates embrace the muddy conditions at the Deniliquin Ute Muster by dressing up at sumo wrestlers. Picture: Deni Ute Muster (Zowie Crump).Hats, Driza-Bones and gum boots of every colour and style is the fashion at this year’s Deni Ute Muster.

The “heavens had opened” on the muster site but that didn’t stop thousands rolling through the gates on Thursday night and Friday.

Wait times to get into the site stretch out into hours for some keep Ute Muster goers.

The weather conditions changed the organisers traffic plan and saw the four to six lane entrance diminished to one lane.

“People had to wait but once they got into the site they are really excited,” Deni Ute Muster general manager Kate Pitt said.

“We’ve offered other camping locations but everyone wants to be at the muster.”

More than 1000 dedicated volunteers were directing traffic in the rain and wind and will continue to work hard during the muster.

“We have amazing volunteers who are giving their all to ensure people who traveled the length and breadth of the country have a great time,” Ms Pitt said.

Some camping areas were diminished due to the wet weather and some areas have been limited to four wheel drives only.

A tractor and other four wheel drives have already been used on site to help move bogged vehicles.

Despite the trying conditions Ms Pitt said they are looking at one of the biggest crowds at the muster in years.

“We have no spare spots we are looking at a jam packed site,” she said.

“It’s up there, probably the second or third biggest crowd we’ve had.”

Tickets had dropped off in the last couple of weeks which organisers but down to the weather forecast but believe the lure of Keith Urban was too much for some.

“It is a dream come true to give people what they wanted for so many years,” Miss Pitt said.

In town, Deniliquin is booming with all accommodation booked out and campsites full.

The Deni Motel manager Susane Cole said they have been booked out since Wednesday.

“If I had three times the amount of rooms I could fill them,” she said.

“Even though it’s raining everyone is happy to be here, it brings in all sorts of people.

“The event is terrific it’s an absolute bonus for the town.”

The Deni Ute Muster is on Friday and Saturday of the the October long weekend every year. Tickets available at the gate.
