Not budging: Welcome to mozzie heaven says Laurie, where the water remains due to poor drainage.A GURLEY family have suffered due to poor draining outside their Millie Street home.

Resident Laurie McKenzie said a pool of water constantly filleddirt gutters outside their fence line.

“We’ve put a sign saying welcome to mozzie heaven because that’s exactly what it has become. Twelve months ago we were worried about the mosquitoes and now its warming up we’re feeling the wrath.”

He said friends, family and other visitors to the home were regularly harassed and bitten by the blood suckers.

Due to recent rainfall around the region, water laying around the roads, paddocks and streets have attracted a large mosquito presence and Mr McKenzie believed the more improvements to roads and gutters could deter the pests.

“Gurley’s never really been on the map but Moree Plains Shire Council have started new guttering in the main street.

“We have had a raft of complaints into council throughout the past 12 months and up to date have had no real reply from the them,” he said.

Mr McKenzie said there was a duty of care to all of Gurley’s residents.

A spokesperson from Moree Plains Shire Council confirmed Millie Road was on the agenda for scheduled work this financial year.

The representative also believed a number of Gurley residents had been informed of the works previously.

However, Mr McKenzie’s biggest worry fell towards his friends and family.

“If one of my family members were to suffer from Ross River Fever I would not be happy,” he said.

Themosquito-borne infectious disease is caused by infection with the Ross River virus. The illness is typically characterised by an influenza-like illness and polyarthritis.
