Lifeline Hunter Central Coast chief executive officer Gillian Summers said those statistics meant suicide in Australia was at a 10-year high.

“They reveal a 25% increase in suicide between 2011 and 2015,” Ms Summers said.“These are frightening, startling statistics and we need immediate action.”

Ms Summers said there had been“a concerning spate of suicides in the Hunter recently” and Lifeline Hunter Central Coast wasfocused on its community suicide prevention services.

It is also focused on helpingfamilies of those who hadsuicided through aSurvivors of Suicide (SOS) bereavement group.

The freeservice providesan opportunity to access peer-based community support in a safe and nurturing environment andis held at Lifeline’s facility in Islingtonon the first Wednesday of every month.

Lifeline’s SOS group facilitatorAmir Salem said it helped people draw strength and knowledge from the experience of others.

“Theidea behind the groupis to help people deal with the grief and loss and everything associated with that…when they see other people open up the healing can be quite quick,” Mr Salem said.“For some people, just listening can help.

“Onegreat thing about this group is it’s a good segue into our other services as well.”

Lake Macquarie resident Lisa Gusse lost herformer partner to suicide a decade ago and said a program such as Lifeline’s SOS group would have helped make sense of her pain and emotions.

Instead she suffered in silence.

“I went through shock, denial, anger, guilt…and I was devastated,” Ms Gusse said.

“It took me about six years and I never thought anyone else understood what had happened …I felt so much guilt.

“A group would have absolutely helped me …people to talk to who understood and who could help explainvery simply that this is how you will feel.”
