Mr Rowlings has not judged a competition before but was the Holstein breed judge for the first day of the Burnie Show on Friday.

“All of the cattle has been really good, they have all been of a high quality,” he said.

Mr Rowlings awarded the supreme champion of the show for the Holstein category, a cow that came from Calthorpe Holstein stud at Latrobe.

He said he had been impressed with the feet and leg structure of all the cattle he had seen in his judging class as well as all the cow’s capacity to milk.

When judging a Holstein Mr Rowlings said he always looked at the cow’s capability to produce milk, their longevity and whether they are a sound looking cow.

“You are looking at their capability to eat and produce milk so you’re looking at their gut to see the capacity of their stomach,” he said.

Mr Rowlings is part of a family stud at Longford and said he had come to judge at the Burnie Show to help out a local community show.

“If there isn’t anyone to help out at these events then they will die out,” he said.

He said he had enjoyed his judging and would consider it again into the future.

The 103rdBurnie Show will continue on Saturday. Gates open at 8am.
